Spirits Rebellious was a band created by Thomas Chapin in the late 1980’s to play his beautiful Brazilian-influenced compositions. Thomas was a legendary musician who died of leukemia just as he was reaching a broad audience. He was the first artist signed to the Knitting Factory label and was a key figure in the “downtown" NYC music scene. The Spirits Rebellious period was just after his long stint touring as musical director of the Lionel Hampton Band and before his Trio became widely popular. Saul Rubin, Joey Cardello and Arthur Kell were in the original Spirits Rebellious group.
